Baseball Hosts Navy on Tuesday Evening

The game has been moved to a 6:00 p.m. start

Coming off a weekend sweep at Hartford, the UMBC baseball team (11-12) gets back into non-conference action when they host Navy at Alumni Field on Tuesday, March 29.

Please note, in order to accommodate Navy's regulations regarding leaving campus, the game time has been moved to 6:00 p.m.   

A Glance at the Retrievers
  • Now 4-2 in America East play, UMBC swept Hartford by scores of 17-5, 16-9 and 8-3 in West Hartford. The Retrievers led wire-to-wire in the first two games, but rallied for five runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to reverse a 3-1 deficit in the series finale.
  • Sophomore Luke Johnson's bases-clearing double in the eighth broke a 3-all tie and senior Christian Easley's second home run of the weekend, a two-run blast in the ninth, highlighted the Sunday rally. Freshman reliever Evan Selmer picked up the win, throwing the final four innings and allowing only one earned run, while fanning six Hawks.
  • UMBC now leads America East with 165 runs scored and is second in batting average at .282.  
  • Sporting a .418 mark, graduate student second baseman Myles Nicholson is the lone America East hitter with a batting average over .400. He leads the league with 38 hits and is second with 29 runs scored and 17 stolen bases.
  • Junior catcher Tony Krueger has eight hits in his last 13 at-bats and is now sixth in the conference with a .345 batting mark.
  • Sophomore shortstop Drew Roberts owns a six-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in his last five outings (11-of-19). He is 12 th in the league in batting average at .329 and leads the Retrievers with 17 RBI's.  
 
A Glance At The Midshipmen 
  • Navy enters Tuesday's matchup off a 1-3 weekend at home, splitting games with Holy Cross and dropping two against Army. The Mids' overall record of 10-14.
  • Senior catcher Christian Policelli leads the Midshipmen with a batting average of .356 (32-for-90). He shares the lead in RBIs with Logan Keller with 13 each. The Midshipmen have tallied a total of 97 runs while giving up 158 to their opponents through 24 games.
  • Sophomore Nolan Jorgenson has been solid on the mound with a record of 2-0. He has pitched the second most innings with 24 while maintaining the lowest ERA on the team at 2.25.
 
Inside The Series
 
  • Tuesday's game will be the third and final regular season meeting between the Retrievers and the Midshipmen. Navy took the first two games to start the season with 10-9 and 11-10 extra-inning wins.
  • This meeting will be the first time Navy has been to UMBC since 2019. That game ended in a Retrievers' 9-3 triumph.
  • UMBC leads the overall series, 27-24, dating back to the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1978.
  • Currently Navy holds a three-game win streak over UMBC.
