Baseball to Host The Mount in a Friday Twin-Bill

Game No. 2 will be the 100th all-time series meeting

The Retriever baseball team (5-7) will host Mount St. Mary's (1-7) in a twin-bill on Friday, March 11 at Alumni Field. Saturday's scheduled game in Emmitsburg was moved to Friday in Baltimore due to expected poor weather conditions. The Retrievers will now play at the Mount on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and the game versus St. Bonaventure has been cancelled.

UMBC had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Retrievers fell, 5-1, at Towson on Tuesday, March 8. Graduate student second baseman Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) and junior outfielder Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) had two hits apiece, but UMBC stranded nine runners. Senior reliever Shane Gorman (Orland Park, Ill.) retired all six hitters he faced for the Retrievers.

UMBC just swept a four-game series versus the Niagara Purple Eagles, posting their first four-game sweep since one over Mount St. Mary's in 2019.

The Retrievers are tied for 20th nationally with 26 stolen bases. Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) is tied for fourth with 1.0 steals per game (12 steals/12 games). Nicholson, who is also tied for fourth in the nation with three triples, leads the squad with a batting average of .429

Freshman Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) is hitting .364 and is 1-0 on the mound with a 3.64 earned run average.

A Look At The Mount

  • The Mount is 1-7 on the season with all eight games to date occurring on the road.

  • After taking one of four games at Lehigh, MSM was swept in a four-game set at Lamar last weekend.

  • Senior catcher Thomas Bramley is The Mount's leading hitter, coming into the weekend series with a .296 average and a team-best three home runs.
A Glance At The Series

  • The two teams should hit the 100-meeting mark this weekend, with UMBC leading the all-time series, 75-22-1.

  • UMBC has won nine of the last ten meetings versus the Mount. In the last match-up, the Retrievers won a 6-5 decision on March 31, 2019.

Another Scheduling Note

  • UMBC's game versus Maryland on March 22 has been moved to Bob Smith Stadium in College Park. The first pitch is still slated for 4:00 p.m. The Retrievers will be the home team.
