Box Score 2 BALTIMORE – Visiting St. Joseph's swept a doubleheader over UMBC on Sunday, taking two of three in the Retrievers' first home action of the season. The Hawks rallied in the fifth inning to take game one, 6-3, and used a six-run second inning en route to a 18-5 triumph in the nightcap.
HOW IT HAPPENED - Saint Joseph's 6, UMBC 3
- Both starting pitchers found the zone early with each pitcher scattering a couple hits in the first two innings.
- The Hawks jumped out to an early lead with a solo home run in the third.
- UMBC responded in a big way, putting up three runs in their half of the third. Freshman Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) doubled home sophomore Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) who got on with a single. Graduate student Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) would later score on a passed ball, with Shertel crossing the plate on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 Retrievers.
- The Hawks however would take the lead for good in the fifth, pushing four runs across that included a three-run double. They would add another in the seventh to defeat UMBC 6-3.
Shertel and Nicholson each had a pair of hits in the contest with Shertel driving in a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED – St. Joseph's 18, UMBC 5
- Sophomore first baseman Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) got his second game started with a two-RBI double to center field, scoring Nicholson and junior center fielder Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) to give UMBC a 2-0 lead after one inning.
- The Hawks responded with a six-run second, including a two-out, wind-aided grand slam to left field.
- After a Roberts one-out single in the bottom of the second, Nicholson crushed a home run to left field. It was the Retrievers' first long ball of the season. Senior right fielder Ian Diaz (Philadlephia, Pa.) reached base on a walk and Trythall doubled him home with a rocket to right-center to cut the deficit to 6-5.
- But the Hawks scored six times over the next three innings to build a 12-5 lead.
- St. Joseph's added three runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
UMBC travels to Georgetown for a Tuesday contest in Washington, D.C.
