Box Score College Park, Md. - UMBC battled No. 22 Maryland on even terms before the host Terrapins pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Retrievers, 3-2, at Bob Smith Stadium.
UMBC has three tough luck losses on the season, falling on the home team's final at-bat in each game.
Sophomore first baseman Luke Trythrall (Poolesville, Md.) and senior left fielder
Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) banged out pair of hits for UMBC.
Senior starting pitcher
Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) started and threw 4.2 innings of two-run, five-hit baseball. Senior
Owen Hamilton (San Anselmo, Calif.) followed Celata and only allowed one hit in 2.1 innings.
Neither team made an error in spring-like conditions in College Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers picked up a pair of singles and a hit batsman, but failed to score in the top of the second.
- Maryland hit a solo home run and added another run to take a 2-0 lead after three innings.
- UMBC's first three hitters reached in the fifth and sophomore infielder Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) drove in the first run with an RBI single to left. With two outs, freshman Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) drove in Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) with a single to right field.
- The Retrievers loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth, but could not push any runs across.
- In the ninth, Charlton drew his third walk of the game and got into scoring position with two outs, but was stranded.
- Maryland got a lead-off double and one-out single to bring home the game-winning run.
The Retrievers are set to open the home schedule with a three-game series versus St. Joseph's on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 3:00 p.m.
