Men's Swimming & Diving Aims to Defend ECAC Winter Title This Weekend

The Retrievers raced through the competition in their return to New York in 2021.

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving squads head to East Meadow, N.Y. to compete in the 2022 ECAC Winter Championships. The competition gets underway at the prestigious Nassau County Aquatics Center on Friday, Dec. 2 and continue through the weekend.

Please see the ECAC Championships website at http://bit.ly/3FcfQT1 for additional information, including admissions' prices.

The men will be looking to defend their 2021 title, while the women secured a second place finish as UMBC competed in the championships for the first time in many years.

The men will face stiff competition from the likes of Monmouth, Marist, St. Peter's and Long Island University.

DEFENDING CHAMPS: A year ago, UMBC amassed 3,075 points, far outdistancing second-place LIU (1,179.5) and third-place Monmouth (1,178).
The 200 free relay squad of senior Gabe Laracurente, graduate student Tiago Asakawa , junior Ryan Harding and senior Niklas Weigelt blazed to a mark of 1:21.02 to open the competition.

Sophomore Oliver Gassman earned his first collegiate individual gold by edging Laracuente in the 100 fly with a mark of 48.19, while Weigelt got into the individual winner's circle by winning the 200 freestyle (1:37.40),

Junior Daniel Nicusen won three golds in Nassau County, including the 200 breaststroke on the final day of competition. He captured that event in a meet record time of 1:59.26, after winning the 200 IM on Friday and 100 breaststroke on Saturday.

UMBC set a new meet record in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Weigelt, Asakawa, Harding and Bode Neale  swam the finale in 2:58.69.

LATELY: The UMBC men's swimming and diving team captured 15 of 16 events in a meet versus America East Conference foe VMI on Nov. 12 in the Retrievers' first home meet of the 2022-23 season.

Graduate student Tiago Asakawa, junior Dani Nicusan, sophomore JJ Chapman and freshman Anders Logas each won a pair of events for the Retrievers.

HAPPY NEW YEAR: The team does not return to competition until we turn the page on 2022. UMBC travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Howard on Jan. 14.
