UMBC opened its 55th season against the Tulane Green Wave this past Monday evening in New Orleans and fell 89-67. The Retrievers whittled an early 17-point deficit to three points in the second half, but the host Green Wave recovered in the opener for both teams at Fogelman Arena. Newcomers and graduate students
Colton Lawrence (Myerstown, Pa., The Hill School / Bentley) and
Tra'Von Fagan (Waterloo, Iowa, Cedar Falls / Buffalo) led UMBC's effort with 14 and 12 points respectively. Junior guard
Matteo Picarelli (Milan, Italy, Inter-Community School of Zurich (Switzerland)) added a career high 11 points and senior forward
Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario, Emery Collegiate Institute / Santa Fe College) led all players with eight rebounds. Kevin Cross and Jaylen Forbes shared scoring honors with 21 points apiece for the hosts.

This is the 37th season of DI hoops for the Black and Gold.
The Retrievers enter the season with ten scholarship players that have never dressed for the program.
Just four scholarship players stepped onto the court in a UMBC uniform (
Yaw Obeng-Mensah,
JC Harris,
Matteo Picarelli and
Jacob Boonyasith (Grand Rapids, Mich., Jenison / American)) prior to Monday's season-opener when seven Retrievers made their debut.
Boonyasith played in his 100
th career contest at Tulane.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Penn State York, who won the PSUAC last year, is already 3-0 this season with convincing wins against Anne Arundel CC, Berkeley, and Harford CC.
The Nittany Lions are averaging 85.0 ppg, shoot 44.2 percent overall, and 35.2 percent from behind the arc.
Junior forward Deriq Brown is averaging a team-best 22.3 ppg and is shooting 50 percent from the floor, while making 42.9 percent of his treys. He also leads the squad in rebounding at 9.7 per game.
Senior guard John John Gillespie is adding 15.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

The Retrievers have won six straight home openers.
UMBC has won both contests against Penn State York, last defeating the Nittany Lions just a season ago in their home opener, 85-47.
The Penn State York contest opens a four-game home stand for UMBC, which also includes Princeton (11/14), Lafayette (11/18), and Central Connecticut State (11/20).
