BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's and men's swimming and diving teams head to Annapolis to take on the United States Naval Academy squads on Saturday, Oct. 23. The meets get underway from Lejeune Hall at 11:00 a.m. and live results will be available through the Meet Mobile app.
The meet was originally scheduled as UMBC's home opener, but ongoing hot water repairs to buildings on the UMBC campus have necessitated the change of venue.
The UMBC men's swimming and diving squad captured 13 of 20 events at the NJIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15 at the Fitness and Wellness Center.
The Retrievers won all four relays over two days and freshman diver
Anders Logas won both diving events. In the pool, graduate student
Tiago Asakawa and junior
Dani Nicusan were double-winners.
Asakawa, a graduate student, earned America East Conference Swimmer of the Week honors for his efforts at NJIT. He won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events and anchored a pair of winning relays. After winning the 50 free on Friday, Asakawa earned the double with a strong final 50 yards in the 100 freestyle, completing the four laps in 46.69.
Nicusan won the 200 butterfly and 200 IM in Newark, while seniors
Niklas Weigelt (200 freestyle) and
Gabe Laracuente (100 butterfly) also triumphed. Sophomore JJ Chapman earned a victory in the 200 backstroke as the Retrievers easily bested the host Highlanders and St. Francis Brooklyn.
UMBC and Navy meet on an annual basis, including last year in Annapolis. Laracuente was edged by .03 seconds in his quest to win the 50 freestyle as Navy triumphed, 201-88.
The Retrievers return to action when they face Towson at Burdick Hall on Saturday, Nov. 5.
