Johnson's Gem, Offensive Output Leads UMBC Baseball to Sunday Sweep at Binghamton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Video Highlights: Game 1 | Game 2

Binghamton, N.Y.-- UMBC baseball got a masterful outing from Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) in game one of the doubleheader, and used a big offensive performance in game two to earn the sweep on Sunday. In the process, the Retrievers snapped a seven-game losing streak.

UMBC moves to 16-20, 11-20 AE on the year while the Bearcats fall to 14-14, 14-14 AE.

Game One:

Game one was an old-school pitcher's duel with both starters combining for complete games and just five hits total. UMBC starter Luke Johnson pitched a masterful game allowing just two Bearcats to reach scoring position.

The Retrievers scored the only run of the contest in the third. Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) led off the inning with a hit by pitch. He would advance on a Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) sacrifice bunt. Just two pitches later, Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) singled home Ryan.

That would be all Johnson would need as he shut down the Bearcats in the 1-0 victory. The freshman struck out seven with just two walks and allowing four hits for the win.

Game Two:

Game two was once again dominated by strong pitching through the early innings with neither side being able to break through. UMBC got on the board first however in the fourth. Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) led off the inning with a single. He would get third after an error and wild pitch and later scored on a Luke Johnson RBI groundout.

The Retrievers would extend that lead in the sixth to take control of the contest. Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) drove in two with a triple that plated Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and Johnson. He would score just pitches later on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

The Bearcats would score twice in the sixth to cut the lead in half, but UMBC put up a four-spot in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk, hit by pitch, and a wild pitch as well as an RBI groundout from Easley to make it 8-2.

Binghamton would add one in the ninth, but UMBC completed the sweep, 8-3 on Sunday.

Easley drove in three runs with Roberts collecting two hits, scoring twice.

Shane Gorman (Orland Park, Ill.) picked up the win in 2.1 innings of relief.

UMBC will return home for their final home series of the year against Stony Brook next Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16. Both days start at noon with senior day ceremonies on Sunday pre-game.
