Last Time Out

The UMBC men's lacrosse team never trailed No. 16 Vermont and held off a late Catamount rally to prevail, 10-8, in cool conditions at UMBC Stadium on April 3. The Retrievers improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in America East play, tying Vermont (4-3, 4-1 AE) for first place in the conference.

The Retrievers held the Catamounts to their lowest scoring total of the season. Vermont was ranked seventh in the nation entering the game with 15.2 goals per contest and their eight goals scored were four fewer than their previous low in a 15-12 opening loss at Bryant.

UMBC freshman midfielder Brian Tregoning (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) led a balanced attack, posting his first career three-goal game. Junior midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's) and sophomore attackman Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) added two goals apiece and senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) extended his scoring streak to 31 with a goal and two assists.

Dawg Bytes

  • The Retrievers started a season at 3-0 for the first time since 2001. The 5-1 start by the Retrievers is the best since an 8-1 opening to the 1992 campaign.
  • Before it was snapped in the 8-7 overtime loss at Binghamton, UMBC's seven-game winning streak was the second-longest in its NCAA Division I history (1981). The program's longest streak ever of 11 in a row occurred in 2008.
  • The Retrievers are ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense, holding foes to 8.5 goals per contest and eighth nationally in clearing percentage at 88.7 percent.
  • Nick Dupuis was selected to the USILA Team of the Week on March 9. Dupuis scored a man-up goal with 1:09 to play in the fourth overtime period to end the longest game in school history on March 7. He completed his first career hat trick in the 13-12 victory over Stony Brook with that dramatic goal and led all scorers with three goals and two assists.
  • Freshman defenseman Ethan Robinson (Randallstown, Md./McDonogh) earned America East Rookie of the Week honors for games ending March 20. Robinson collected four ground balls and caused three turnovers in his first extensive action of the year in the 13-10 win at Hartford.
  • Senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner earned America East Defensive Player of the Week honors after an 11-save effort versus the explosive Catamounts (April 5). Lingner is seventh in the nation with a goals against average of 7.99.

A Look at the Great Danes and the All-Time Series

  • UAlbany dropped to 5-3 overall as the Great Danes fell, 13-8, at No. 9 Syracuse on Thursday evening. With the game tied at four, Syracuse scored four-straight goals to go up 8-4 with 3:48 left in the second. Dane goalkeeper Liam Donnelly made 14 saves on the night as his side was outshot, 50-30.
  • UAlbany averages 13.8 goals per game and 80 of 110 goals have drawn assists. Four players have 20 points or more, led by sophomore attacker Graydon Hogg with 17 goals and 6 assists. Graduate student linemate Jakob Patterson, the 2019 America East Offensive Player of the Year, leads the conference with 2.83 assists per game.
  • The Danes are second nationally in clearing at 90.9 percent.
  • Against common America East opponents to date, UAlbany (3-2 in conference) has dropped contests to Vermont (14-12) and Stony Brook (16-10), but trounced Hartford (16-6) and Binghamton (19-7).  UMBC is 4-1 against those foes, defeating Vermont, SBU and Hartford, while splitting two games versus Binghamton.
  • UAlbany leads the all-time series, 13-11, and has won nine of the last ten meetings. The lone Retriever broke an eight-game slide, an 11-7 UMBC triumph in 2018 when the Great Danes were ranked No. 1 in the country.
  • The Great Danes have won six of nine meetings in Albany and the last four in a row. UMBC's last win occurred in 2011.
  • In 2019, UAlbany narrowly avenged the 2018 setback at the hands of the Retrievers and triumphed, 9-7. UMBC sliced a 6-1 first quarter deficit to 8-7 with 4:42 remaining, but could not complete the rally. Then freshman Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) was UMBC's lone multiple-point producer, recording his first career two-goal game. Lingner made 12 saves, including eight stops with just three goals allowed in the final 45 minutes.
  • Lingner made 16 saves in the Retrievers' 11-7 win over the Danes in '18, giving him 28 stops and 16 goals allowed (63.6 percent) in two contests versus UA.
  • For the second consecutive year, Ryan Frawley is one of 20 men's lacrosse student-athletes from across the country to be tabbed as a candidate for the Senior CLASS award.
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran, in his fifth campaign at UMBC, now has a career record of 26-27. He is just the third UMBC mentor in 51 years of USILA (1971) competition. He led the Retrievers to America East Tournament berths in two of his first three campaigns, including a league title in 2019. Moran is assisted by Joe Bucci and Craig Chick

UMBC will honor its seniors on Senior Day in the home regular season finale on Saturday, April 17 when they host UMass Lowell. Game time is set for noon at UMBC Stadium.
