BALTIMORE-- UMBC baseball won game one of today's doubleheader against the Bearcats before falling in a rainy game two to earn a series split. The Retrievers capitalized on a couple of Bearcat errors in game one, but a late rally doomed UMBC in game two.
UMBC moves to 14-14, 9-14 AE on the year while the Bearcats move to 10-10, 10-10 AE.
Game One:
Binghamton got things going early in the first getting run just three batters in to take the early lead. However, the Retrievers responded with a four-spot in their half. Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) led off the game with a hit by pitch and scored on a Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) RBI double. After Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Christian Maceda (Oradell, N.J.) reached base, Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) smashed a home run to left to give UMBC a 4-1 lead.
The Bearcats would score two in the second and four in the fourth to retake a 7-4 lead. UMBC would then strike in the fifth and never look back. With the bases loaded, Easley scored on a wild pitch. That set up another bases-loaded situation for Charlton. This time he turned a single into a base clearing hit, also scoring after a throwing error.
Binghamton got a run back in the sixth, but another five-spot on RBI singles from Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus), RBI walk from Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.), wild pitch and RBI ground out from Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) made it 14-8.
UMBC would give up a run in the seventh, but Keegan Leffler (Wilton, N.Y.) picked up his second save of the year in a 14-9 win going 2.2 innings of relief.
Joe Pucek (Morristown, N.J.) picked up the win in 1.1 innings of relief. Charlton was the lone Retriever with two hits, driving in five runs.
Game Two:
UMBC picked up where they left off with a pair of runs in the first. Easley led off with a walk, then proceeded to steal two bases and scored on a wild pitch. Drew Roberts scored after stealing second and scoring on a throwing error to lead 2-0.
The Retrievers held the Bearcats at bay until a solo home run in the fourth cut the lead in half. Binghamton took the lead with a two-spot in the sixth, but that lead was short-lived as UMBC scored two in their half on a wild pitch, and Cilio sacrifice fly to give them a 4-3 lead.
However, the Bearcats threw the final punch scoring three runs in the seventh, and shut down the Retrievers late in a 6-4 win.
UMBC mustered just four hits with Roberts, Diaz, Torres, and Cilio recording hits.
The Retrievers will remain at home to take on NJIT next Saturday and Sunday. Both days will start at 1 p.m. on AmericaEast.TV.
