Box Score 2 Stony Brook, N.Y.-- UMBC baseball battled all afternoon but fell in both games to open their series at Stony Brook on Saturday. The Retrievers held the lead in game one, but a late comeback by the Seawolves was the difference.
UMBC falls to 12-10, 7-10 AE on the year while Stony Brook improves to 17-8, 13-1 AE.
Game One:
UMBC jumped on the Seawolves early with a run in their half of the first. After a leadoff groundout, UMBC loaded the bases on a double and two walks. Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) brought in the first Retriever run with a sacrifice fly that scored Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) to make it 1-0.
Stony Brook responded with their first hit of the game coming in the third on a solo home run that tied the score at 1-1. UMBC retook the lead late in the game on a Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) sacrifice fly that scored Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to give UMBC a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
The Seawolves would throw the final punch, however, getting a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI double and fielding error to give them game one, 3-2.
UMBC held the Seawolves to just four hits with the Retrievers mustering just four hits themselves.
Game Two:
Stony Brook started game two with a four-spot in their half of the first to take an early lead. UMBC would respond in the third with two runs. Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) led off with a walk and advanced on an Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) ground out. He would score on an Easley double just two batters later. Easley would come around after a throwing error allowed Roberts to reach and get all the way to third.
The Seawolves would add another to make it a 5-2 advantage, but the Retrievers once again had the answer. They put up a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) to cut the deficit to 5-4.
However, the Seawolves would get one back in their half to increase the deficit to 6-4 into the eighth. That would be all the Retrievers would muster in the game as UMBC fell 6-4 in game two.
Easley and Roberts each had two hits with Easley, Diaz, and Torres driving in runs.
The Retrievers and Seawolves conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
