Last Time Out

In the season opener one week ago, UMBC trailed Mount St. Mary's (1-3), 7-4, with three minutes remaining on the UMBC Stadium clock. The Mount was primed to post their first-ever victory on the Retrievers' home field.

But the Retrievers scored three times in the final 2:58 of regulation and sophomore midfielder Mason Edwards (Alexandria, Va.) netted his first career goal just six ticks into the overtime period to hand the hosts an 8-7 overtime decision over the Mountaineers.

UMBC sophomore midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md.) led all goal scorers with three. Sophomore attackman Nick Dupuis – who scored the game-tying goal with 16 seconds remaining -  posted a goal and an assist, while junior attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md.) contributed a pair of assists. UMBC senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made eight saves.

Road Trip

UMBC plays two straight on the road after the SBU contest, travelling to Binghamton for the next match-up on Saturday, March 13 in Vestal, N.Y.

Dawg Bytes

  • UMBC received three Votes in USILA polls of Feb. 8, 15 and 22 and received votes in this past week's Inside Lacrosse media poll.
  • The Retrievers have not started a season at 2-0 since 2009, the last year they captured an America East title prior to the 2019 championship.
  • Speaking of 2009, UMBC's current five-game winning streak is the longest since the Retrievers won six in a row during that campaign.
  • Saturday's game versus the Mount marked the return of senior defenseman Nick Griffin (Mariottsville, Md./Liberty). The 2018 Academic All-American missed the entire 2019 season and the abbreviated 2020 campaign due to lower body injuries.
  • For the second consecutive year, senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) is one of 30 men's lacrosse student-athletes from across the country to be tabbed as a candidate for the Senior CLASS award.
  • UMBC is 2-5 in their last seven America East openers, with both victories occurring at the hands of Stony Brook (2017, 2014).
  • This will be the 27th meeting between UMBC and Stony Brook with the Retrievers leading the all-time series, 15-11. UMBC snapped a two-game slide to the Seawolves with a shocking 14-8 victory in the 2019 America East semi-finals. Brett McIntyre scored four times and Trevor Patschorke added a pair of goals and three assists in the win over the top-seeded Seawolves. McIntyre had scored three goals in an earlier 14-7 setback at SBU in the regular season.
  • UMBC holds a narrow 7-6 lead over SBU in games played in Baltimore, but the visitors have won the last two meetings.
  • Stony Brook (2-1) cruised to lopsided victories over Sacred Heart (20-8) and Bryant (14-8) in its first two games before dropping a 20-17 shootout at Hofstra on Feb. 27. The Seawolves debuted in the USILA poll at No. 17 on Feb. 22 prior to the loss to their local rivals.
  • The Seawolves are currently ranked sixth in the nation, scoring 17.0 goals per game and dishing out 10.7 assists per outing. Red-shirt freshman attackman Dylan Pallonetti, a Stony Brook native and transfer from Maryland, also holds down the No. 6 spot in the country in goals per game with 12 in three contests. His linemate, graduate student Cory VanGinhoven, has added eight goals and a team-best six assists. Junior goalkeeper Anthony Palma is allowing 12.0 goals per game and is maintaining a 49.3 save percentage.
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran, in his fifth campaign at UMBC, now has a career record of 23-26. He is just the third UMBC mentor in 51 years of USILA (1971) competition. He led the Retrievers to America East Tournament berths in two of his first three campaigns, including a league title in 2019. Moran is assisted by Joe Bucci and Craig Chick
  • The 2021 slate features nine America East Conference games throughout the months of March and April. UMBC will play home-and-away series with league foes Stony Brook and Binghamton and face the other five schools one time each.
  • Returning players/starters returning – Thirty of 37 players on last year's roster return for the 2021 campaign, including fifth-year senior Ryan Frawley and graduate students Brett McIntyre and Colin Kasner. McIntyre and Kasner have earned their undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering and business technology administration respectively. Thirteen newcomers, including a dozen freshman, dot the 2021 roster.
  • The Retriever squad selected seniors Ryan Frawley and Nick Griffin and junior Keith Dukes (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) as team captains for the 2021 campaign. Frawley and Griffin were tabbed to reprise their roles as captains from the 2020 season, while Dukes is a first-year honoree.
  • UMBC attackmen Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta, Can.) and Trevor Patschorke earned 2020 America East Conference Men's Lacrosse All-Academic Team honors, A 33-goal scorer in the championship season of 2019, McIntyre posted the highest grade-point average (3.86) of any Retriever male student-athlete in UMBC's College of Engineering and Information Technology. A political science major, Patschorke earned the 2019 America East Tournament MVP and has 80 career points in only 25 contests.
  • Versatile senior Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) moved into sole possession of 5th place on UMBC's all-time caused turnover list with 46. He's averaged 2.19 CT/game in 21 career games for the Retrievers. Seth Mackin '15, stands in fourth place with 47.
  • Frawley enters weekend tied for 22nd in the nation with points in 28 consecutive games. In his final outing of 2020, Frawley scored six goals versus High Point and became the 35th player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau (86-17-103). He is tied for 32nd place on the school's all-time scoring list.
  • Junior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) has been selected to the 2021 USILA / Warrior and New Balance Preseason All-American Division I Team. An Honorable Mention selection, Lingner posted a save percentage of 59.6 and a goals-against average of 8.4 in 2020. He needs 27 saves to move into UMBC's all-time top ten.
  • SB Nation's College Crosse named Retriever freshmen Tony Diallo (Suitland, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) and Alex Poma (Marietta, Ga.) to its 2020 All-Freshmen Honorable Mention team. Diallo started all five games for UMBC and finished the abbreviated season with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers. Poma completed the 2020 campaign ranked as the No. 24 face-off specialist in the nation. He won 58.8 percent of his draws taken, including a spectacular 49 of 71 (69.0 percent) in his final three games.
  • UMBC is still the reigning America East Championships, having captured the league title in improbable fashion in 2019. The Retrievers were 3-8, including three overtime losses, before winning the first of four non-home elimination games in the regular season finale at Hartford. The fourth-seeded Retrievers upended host and top-seeded Stony Brook, 14-8, in the semis, then rallied from a four-goal third quarter deficit to edge Vermont, 14-13, in the championship game. UMBC went on the road and defeated Marist, 14-8, in the NCAA First Round game, before falling at No. 1 Penn State in the Round of 16.

In a tight race with just nine points separating the top four teams, Stony Brook was tabbed the 2021 America East men's lacrosse preseason favorite by the league's preseason coaches.
Stony Brook, winner of the 2019 #AEMLAX regular-season title, four of a possible seven first-place votes and 44 points. UAlbany finished just one point behind, earning two first-place tallies and 43 points. UMBC, the 2019 #AEMLAX champion, received the final two first-place votes and 38 points.
