Orono, Maine-- Starter Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) fresh off a home run yesterday picked up the win for the Retrievers on Sunday in a 7-1 win. Maine and UMBC were set to play two on Sunday, but impending weather in Orono forced the teams to play just one on Sunday.
UMBC improves to 7-5, 2-5 AE snapping a five-game losing streak. Maine falls to 7-4, 2-1 AE.
The Retrievers wasted no time getting things started with a two-spot in the first. Nolan Charlton (Atlantic City, N.J.) led off the game with a walk and would later score along with Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) on a Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) RBI triple to give UMBC an early lead.
That would be all starter Luke Johnson would need as he allowed just one hit through five innings. UMBC would add four more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Diaz would triple in Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) who led off the fifth with a walk. Diaz scored two batters later when Luke Belanger (Alexandria, Va.) reached on a throwing error. Christian Torres then scored on a bases-loaded walk and Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) capped the inning with an RBI single.
Maine would get one back in the sixth, but Diaz struck again in the eight getting an RBI groundout to score Roberts to push the advantage to 7-1. UMBC kept the Black Bears off the scoreboard in the latter innings to take the series finale 7-1.
Diaz had another solid day at the plate going 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI with three stolen bases. Easley had two hits for the Retrievers who belted two triples. Johnson finished the day going 5.2 innings with three hits, one earned run, and five strikeouts.
UMBC will remain on the road next weekend taking on UAlbany on Saturday and Sunday, April 3-4.
