Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Orono, Maine-- UMBC baseball fell in the series openers at Maine on Saturday afternoon. UMBC scored just three runs over the two games with two of the runs coming off home runs. The Retrievers fell in game one 4-1 and dropped game two 10-2 to fall to 6-5, 1-5 AE.
Game One:
Both starting pitchers battled early with both teams struggling to get anything strung together early. UMBC did get a two-out single from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) in the first, but he would be stranded on base.
Maine would be the first to break through, putting up four runs in the fourth off starter Reid Celata (Virginia Beach, Va.) to take a 4-0 lead. However, Christian Maceda (Oradell, N.J.) got one back the next half-inning, blasting a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-1 after five.
That would be all the Retrievers would get, as Maine starter Nick Sinacola struck out 16 Retrievers in the 4-1 win.
Four different Retrievers recorded hits with Maceda having the only extra-base hit.
Game Two:
The Black Bears got things rolling in game two in the second inning, putting up four runs in the inning to take an early lead. That lead extended to 7-0 the next inning after another three runs, and got to 10-0 heading into the ninth.
UMBC would get two runs in the final frame. Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) blasted a solo home run for the first run of the game for the Retrievers. Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) followed that up with a single and would later score after Dylan Wilkinson (Fairfax, Va.) reached on an error to make it 10-2.
UMBC mustered just hits in the game.
UMBC and Maine will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon on AmericaEast.TV.
