Men's Lacrosse Opens Home-and-Home Series Versus Binghamton in New York on Wednesday Afternoon

The UMBC men's lacrosse team (3-0, 2-0 America East) boards the bus again for America East competition when they travel to Binghamton (1-1, 1-1) for a Wednesday, March 24 match-up. This contest is the rescheduled game from the original March 13 date and will mark the first of two games between the two teams in a four-day span.

The opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. from the Bearcats Sports Complex and the game will be available on ESPN+.

Binghamton returns to UMBC Stadium to play a Saturday, March 27 contest at noon.

Last Time Out

Sophomore Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) scored a career-best five times as visiting UMBC led from start to finish and defeated Hartford, 13-10, at Al-Marzook Field on March 20.

The Retrievers won for the seventh consecutive time dating back to the truncated 2020 season and improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in America East play. UH dropped to 0-3.

Due to a pause in team activities due to COVID-19, UMBC had not played since a thrilling 13-12 four-overtime victory over Stony Brook on March 6.

By the Numbers

0 – The number of previous overtime wins by the Retrievers under Ryan Moran in three tries. They all occurred in the 2019 championship season. UMBC won its first two games in extra time this season.  

4- Number of times that UMBC has competed in overtime games in back-to-back fashion (1977, 2008, 2016, 2021)

4- The number of goals scored by Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta) versus Stony Brook. It was one shy of his career high and matched his 4-goal effort the last time UMBC faced the Seawolves in the 2019 America East semi-final victory.

5  - The number of points recorded by Dupuis in each of the last two games.

20 - UMBC's national ranking by the USILA in games ending March 7. It is the first national ranking for the Retrievers since March 6, 2010 when the 18th-ranked Retrievers fell at No. 4 North Carolina, 12-7.

68:00 – Historically, UMBC is 3-1 when games go into a third overtime period. UMBC defeated Ohio State, 14-13 in 1992 and Maryland, 9-8, in 2008, but lost to Delaware, 11-10, in 2010.  

74:51 – Lingner guarded the cage versus Stony Brook for that long, the lengthiest amount of time played in school history.

2016- The last year that the Retrievers competed in back-to-back overtime games. They won at UMass Lowell, 9-8, then lost in the season finale versus UAlbany, 15-14.

  • UMBC received 39 votes and earned the USILA No. 20 ranking on March 8. In the March 22 poll, the Retrievers were the top team "receiving votes" with 35. America East school Vermont (16) and UAlbany (19) were listed in the Top 20 and Stony Brook (9) also received votes.  
  • The Retrievers have started a season at 3-0 for the first time since 2001.
  • UMBC's current seven-game winning streak is the second-longest in its NCAA Division I history. The program's longest streak ever of 11 in a row occurred a year before in 2008.
  • Nick Dupuis was selected to the USILA Team of the Week on March 9. Dupuis scored a man-up goal with 1:09 to play in the fourth overtime period to end the longest game in school history on March 7. He completed his first career hat trick in the 13-12 victory over Stony Brook with that dramatic goal and led all scorers with three goals and two assists.
  • Freshman defenseman Ethan Robinson (Randallstown, Md./McDonogh earned America East Rookie of the Week honors for games ending March 20. Robinson collected four ground balls and caused three turnovers in his first extensive action of the year in the 13-10 win at Hartford.
  • UMBC leads the all-time series with Binghamton, 16-6.
  • In their last meeting, the Retrievers led all the way in a 13-6 victory over the Bearcats. UMBC jumped out to a 6-0 lead and scored six of the game's final eight goals to cruise to the win. Senior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) led a balanced effort with three goals and senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) stopped 13 Bearcat shots in the victory.
  • UMBC snapped a four-game losing streak at Binghamton with a 5-2 triumph in 2018. The Bearcats have won five of nine contests in Vestal.
  • Binghamton opened with an 11-5 victory at NJIT on March 6 before falling, 19-7, versus UAlbany on March 20. The Bearcats were outscored, 12-2, in periods two and three. Sophomore face-off specialist Matthew Desouza won 13-of-23 draws versus the Great Danes.
  • Senior attackman Justin Roderka scored five of the Bearcats' 11 goals in the win over NJIT.   
  • For the second consecutive year, Ryan Frawley is one of 20 men's lacrosse student-athletes from across the country to be tabbed as a candidate for the Senior CLASS award.  
  • Head Coach Ryan Moran, in his fifth campaign at UMBC, now has a career record of 25-26. He is just the third UMBC mentor in 51 years of USILA (1971) competition. He led the Retrievers to America East Tournament berths in two of his first three campaigns, including a league title in 2019. Moran is assisted by Joe Bucci and Craig Chick
  • The 2021 slate features nine America East Conference games throughout the months of March and April. UMBC will play home-and-away series with league foes Stony Brook and Binghamton and face the other five schools one time each.
