BALTIMORE - Sophomore right fielder Adam Schwartz (Akron, Pa.) capped an eight-run UMBC fifth inning by belting a grand slam, leading the Retrievers to a 13-7 victory over George Mason and completed the weekend sweep of the Patriots.
Schwartz homered again in the seventh inning as the Retrievers have opened the season with five consecutive victories.
George Mason, which was paced by a pair of home runs by designated hitter Scott Morgan, fell to 2-6.
The Retrievers, who rallied from a 5-0 first-inning deficit to defeat Mason, 14-10, in Fairfax on Friday, fell behind 4-0 after one inning at a blustery Alumni Field.
But the hosts trimmed the deficit to 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth when they sent 13 batters to the plate. Junior left fielder Ethan Wentzlaff (Damascus, Md./Damascus) tied the game on a single to right field and junior center fielder Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.) did the same to give the Retrievers a 6-5 lead. After a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk extended the lead to 8-5, Schwartz mashed a 0-2 breaking ball deep over the left-center field fence for his first career home run.
UMBC junior pitcher Reid Celata pitched 4.1 innings of five-hit relief to pick up his second win over the season. He only allowed one run on Morgan's second homer of the game in the sixth inning, walked none, and fanned three.
Wentzlaff contributed a pair of hits and scored three runs for UMBC.
The Retrievers host UMass Lowell in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday to open America East Conference play.
