UMBC Track and Field Opens 2021 Season at Salisbury Spring Meet

BALTIMORE-- UMBC track and field will return to competition for the first time outdoor since the 2019 season when they head to Salisbury for the Salisbury Spring Meet on Saturday. The Retrievers return a number of athletes who will look to help the Retrievers as they start the path toward an America East championship.

Back At It:

-UMBC track and field will get back to action after over a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team last competed during the indoor season at the America East Championships last February, with the last outdoor meet coming at the ECAC/IC4A Championships, with three Retrievers making it to the NCAA East Preliminaries and one heading to the NCAA Championships.

-UMBC cross country also got back to action last weekend with the America East Championships with both teams placing seventh at the meet. 

Recap of 2019 Outdoor Season:

-On the women's side, UMBC finished seventh with Kelechi Nwanaga won gold at the America East Championships in the javelin, earning a spot at the NCAA East Preliminaries in the process. Kaya Knake earned silver in the 800m after winning gold the previous year. The 4x800m relay team took third with Bridgett Redding (8th, 800m), Erin Patrice (6th, 100m), Kara Patrice (8th, 100m), and Tori Johnson (4th, 400m hurdles) earned top-eight finishes. The 4x100m relay team finished in fourth on the track. 

-The men were led by Manos Kamtsiklis and Alexios Prodanas who went 1-2 in the hammer throw. Both men earned a spot in the NCAA East Preliminaries and Prodanas heading to the NCAA Championships. Trenson Terry finished fourth in the long jump and then took fourth in the 400m hurdles at the America East Championships, as the men's program finished fifth at the meet. 

-Kamtsiklis followed up with a bronze in the discus with Taylor Baraonski taking third in the 1,500m. Miles Smith led the runners with a sixth-place finish in the 800m. He then teamed up with Baranoski, Erik Jenks, and Joe Viqueira to take fourth in the 4x800m relay.

-The Retrievers will head to Pennsylvania to compete at the Lehigh Triangular on Sunday, March 21.
