Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. – UMBC junior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) each produced career bests, leading the Retrievers (1-1) to a 9-4 victory over Mount St. Mary's (1-2) in the Mountaineers' home opener at Waldron Stadium.
Lingner backstopped a tremendous defensive effort, making a career-high 16 saves in 60 minutes of work. The Retrievers blanked the Mount in the second half and only allowed one goal in nearly the final 50 minutes of play.
'I think our defensive coaches, Coach Koesterer and Coach Bucci had the boys ready to go, they had a great week of practice," said UMBC head coach Ryan Moran. "The guys are doing a great job playing together and it's great to see them have success on the field."
Galloway, who served as a face-off specialist in freshman season, scored a career-high four goals to spark the UMBC offense. He netted two goals in 14 games in 2019.
"We know what Brandon is capable of," said Moran. "He's one of the best athletes on our team and I was so happy for him to have a breakout performance like that. Hopefully, that will propel him to having more success this season."
It looked as if UMBC would take a 5-3 lead into halftime, but a long-range desperation shot by the Mount's Matt Haggerty eluded Lingner as the horn sounded and the hosts took momentum into the locker room.
"Tommy has the demeanor that you want every goalie to have," said Moran. "He really doesn't get too high or too low, he's always ready to see the next shot. He's been working really hard on his preparation and it's just a culmination of his talent and his preparation coming to fruition on the field."
Mount St. Mary's had numerous chances to knot the game at 5-all in the third period, but UMBC held the hosts to five third quarter shots. UMBC junior midfielder Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) broke the drought with a dodge and left-handed drive that beat Mount goalkeeper Dylan Furnback at the 10:17 mark of the period. Just 63 seconds later, Retriever freshman middie Dane Hall (Harwood, Md./St. John's College) produced his first collegiate goal and the visitors took a 7-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
Galloway netted his fourth goal of the game just 1:23 into the fourth quarter. The Mount attempted three shots to trim the deficit to three, but came up empty, and, after UMBC freshman defenseman Tony Diallo (Suitland, Md./St. Anthony's Episcopal) caused a turnover, sophomore midfielder Jack Thomas (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) ended a long possession by blasting home the game's final goal at the 7:02 mark.
UMBC sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and senior linemate Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) also recorded multiple points with a goal and an assist apiece. For Frawley, it was his 24th consecutive game with a goal and a point.
The Mount opened the scoring just 72 seconds into the game, but Galloway struck twice in a span of 2:38 to give the visitors a 2-1 lead at the 6:40 mark. The hosts responded seven seconds later on the ensuing draw and took a 3-2 advantage at the 9:43 mark. But Frawley took a Patschorke feed and tied the score with 11 seconds left and the teams were all even at 3-3 after 15 minutes.
Patschorke gave the Retrievers the lead for good, scoring on a brave dodge from behind the cage just 40 seconds into the second quarter and Galloway completed his hat-trick at the 8:13 mark to give the visitors either team's first two-goal lead of the game.
The Retrievers outshot the Mountaineers, 37-33, and edged the hosts, 26-25, in the ground ball battle. UMBC, which only won 5-of-24 face-offs in the opener versus Georgetown and 6-of-27 versus the Mount a season ago, battled to come away with 7-of-15 in today's affair.
UMBC returns home and opens a three-game homestand by welcoming Sacred Heart on Feb. 29.
Notes: The scoreless second half recorded by UMBC was the sixth-such defensive effort in school history and first since holding Binghamton off the board in the second half in April of 2018… The Mount was coming off a 11-10 win over Towson, where they captured 14-of-24 draws… Dating back to last year, UMBC has won four of their last five road games… The game marked the 25th meeting between UMBC and the Mount in men's lacrosse and the Retrievers won for the 24th time, avenging a 16-7 defeat in the last meeting in Emmitsburg two seasons ago.
