The Catamounts got a quick jump on the Retrievers, running out to an 11-1 lead early on. UMBC would respond with a 4-0 spurt of their own thanks to a Dimitrije Spasojevic layup and Brandon Horvath dunk. The Retrievers would continue to chip away at the deficit. K.J. Jackson would pick off a pass and finish on the other end to cut it to nine before R.J. Eytle-Rock (London, England) drilled a three in transition to make it 18-12 midway through.
That would spark a 6-0 run for the Retrievers to make it 20-18 thanks to a pair of Spasojevic buckets. Vermont would make a run to retake a double-digit lead late, but UMBC ends the half on a 6-0 run to trail 35-29 at the break.
Horvath led the way with nine first-half points with Spasojevic adding eight. Both teams shot 43 percent in the half.
UMBC would come out of the locker room with five quick points to trail by just one after Eytle-Rock absorbed the contact and one.
However, the Catamounts would use a 16-3 run to increase their lead. Vermont would lead by as many as 24 in the second half, as the Catamounts defeated the Retrievers, 74-50 on Saturday.
UMBC will now have the week off before traveling to New Hampshire next Saturday. Tip-off with the Wildcats is set for 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+.
