UMBC Baseball Drops Two to Open Series with UMass Lowell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lowell, Mass.-- UMBC baseball dropped both games of their double header with UMass Lowell on Saturday. The River Hawks clinched a postseason berth with the wins, eliminating UMBC from playoff contention. The Retrievers held leads in both games early, but each time the River Hawks answered back.

UMBC falls to 21-28, 6-16 AE on the year while UMass Lowell improves to 14-33, 9-11 AE.

Game One:

UMBC got things started early in the first game, putting up a run in the second inning. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) single. After Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) walked to load the bases, Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) drew a walk to plate Torres and give UMBC the early lead.

The River Hawks had answer in their half of the second, putting up two runs to take a 2-1 lead. UMBC tied the game  just two innings later on an Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) double that scored Finn.

However, UMass Lowell retook the lead for good in the fifth, holding on for a 4-2 win in game one.

Pinkston and Machado drove in runs with Machado collecting the only extra base hit for the Retrievers.

Game Two:

UMBC once again took the lead first in game two, putting up a two spot in the first. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) led off the game with a walk and would later score on a Ryan Brown (Hagerstown, Md./St. James/Charleston Southern) RBI single. Terrence Pinkston would score the next at bat on a Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) RBI single to give the Retrievers the lead.

However, that would be all the Retrievers would muster as the River Hawks scored four in the second and one in the fifth to pull ahead 5-2, winning by that score.

Brown led the Retrievers with two of the six hits and driving in one.

UMBC and UMass Lowell close out the series tomorrow at noon.
