Wright Blasts Two Home Runs; UMBC Baseball Falls 11-6 to George Washington on Tuesday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.— The Retrievers held a lead going into the sixth, but the Colonials scored four runs in the sixth to take control of the game in an 11-6 win on Tuesday. Senior AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) hit two home runs in the game as the only Retriever with multiple hits in the contest.

UMBC falls to 14-14 while George Washington improves to 19-13.

The Retrievers got the scoring started in the second inning with AJ Wright leading off the inning with a solo shot to left to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.

GW came right back in the third with a pair of runs to give them their first lead of the game, but that lead would not last long with UMBC retaking the lead in the fifth. After Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) led off the fifth with a double and advanced to third on a Matt Shatto (Lancaster, Pa.) single, Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) singled through the left side to score Beeman. With the bases loaded, Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) reached on a fielder's choice allowing Shatto to score to give UMBC a 3-2 lead.

However, the Colonials would put up four in the sixth to take the lead for good, 6-3. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-4, but GW would get a pair in the eighth to extend the lead back to 9-4.

Wright would come up in the eighth and blast his second home run of the day, this time to left center to make it 9-5, with Reese Varley (Haymarket, Va.) singling home Beeman to make it 9-6 into the final inning.

GW would score two more in the ninth, holding the Retriever in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-6 decision on Tuesday.

Wright was the lone Retriever with two hits, both coming off solo home runs. Beeman scored a pair of runs to lead the Retrievers.

UMBC will have a short turnaround, traveling to Delaware for a 7 p.m. start tomorrow in Newark.
