Schoch Sets Career Saves Record; UMBC Baseball Snaps Losing Skid with 7-4 Win Against Delaware

Box Score

Newark, Del.-- Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) set the program record for career saves, going 2.1 innings for his second save of the season and 12th of his career. The Retrievers jumped on the Blue Hens early and never looked back to snap their two-game losing streak with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) leading the way with three RBI.

UMBC improves to 15-14 while Delaware falls to 12-20.

The Retrievers got the scoring started early in the first. Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) doubled with one out and would be brought in with a Christian Torres single up the middle to make it 1-0. Torres would later steal home to make it 2-0 after one.

AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) extended the lead in the third with a double to score Torres, and would score himself on the next pitch thanks to a Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) double that made it 4-0.

After the Blue Hens got one back in the fourth, UMBC put up two more in the fifth. Torres hit a sacrifice fly to score O'Saben who led off with a triple. Two batters later, Casey smashed a solo home run to right to push the lead to 6-1.

Delaware would not go away, as they scored three over the next two innings to cut the lead to 6-4, but a Torres sacrifice fly in the seventh bumped it back to 7-4.

Schoch would come on in the seventh, striking out six of the nine batters he faced in 2.1 innings for his second save of the year and a program best 12th of his career. The mark breaks the record set by Denis Mikush back in 2016.

Bryan Gilliam (Mechanicsville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) picked up his first win as a Retriever, going four innings in relief, scattering six hits with two strikeouts.

UMBC travels to UAlbany this weekend for a pivotal America East series this Saturday and Sunday.
