UMBC Baseball Drops 13-4 Decision to Navy on Thursday Afternoon

Box Score

Annapolis, Md.-- UMBC baseball got out to a good start against the Midshipmen, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, but Navy put up nine unanswered runs to take the lead in a 13-4 win on Thursday. Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) and Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) each had two hits to lead the Retrievers.

The Retrievers move to 2-5 on the year while the Midshipmen improve to 6-6.

UMBC got things started back in the first inning, all with two outs. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) earned a five-pitched walk and would advance on a single from Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.). Goodwin would score just two pitches later off a Raven Beeman single and error by the Midshipmen. Freshman Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) would follow up with a single of his own to plate Torres, giving the Retrievers a 2-0 lead after one half inning.

From there, Navy would go on to put up four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-2 before adding one in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead.

UMBC mustered just one hit during that stretch, coming on a Beeman single in the sixth.

The Retrievers found their swing in the seventh, cutting into the deficit with a pair of runs. After Colin Casey (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) got aboard with singles, Terrence Pinkston doubled down the left field line to plate both Casey and Machado to make it 9-4.

The Mids would score four more over the last two innings and hold off the Retrievers in a 13-4 win on Thursday.

Pinkston and Beeman each had two hits with Pinkston driving in a pair of runs.

UMBC will return to action this Saturday and Sunday when they host Delaware State. The two will play a double-header on Saturday starting at noon, with a single game on Sunday also at noon. All three games will be played at Blandair Park in Columbia, Md. due to field conditions at UMBC.
