Retrievers Win Third Straight; Defeat Coppin State 16-2 on Wednesday

Box Score

Hanover, Md.-- UMBC baseball put up double digit runs for the second consecutive day, defeating Coppin State 16-2 and winning their third straight game on Wednesday. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) led the Retrievers with three hits and four RBI as he continues his hot start to the year.

The Retrievers improve to 8-11 on the year while the Eagles fall to 12-9.

UMBC had the first good chance of the game, with Reese Varley (Haymarket, Va.) starting off the third with a single and advancing to third on a Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) single just two batters later. Pinkston would steal second to put a pair in scoring position, but both were stranded on base.

After the Eagles got the scoring started in the fourth with a run, UMBC would score the next 16 runs, unanswered to take a commanding lead.

Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) doubled with one out in the fifth to get things started. He would advance on a wild pitch and later score on an AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) fielder's choice to tie it at 1-1. Two batters later, Torres singled in Wright and Pinkston. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) added a pair himself with a single to make it 5-1.

Torres would score a run himself on a wild pitch in the seventh that started another five run inning. Machado drove in Varley and Goodwin with a single to right, setting up Pinkston. Pinkston would unload on a two-run home run to left, his second in as many days to make it 10-1.

The Retrievers would not stop there, as Torres would score again on a wild pitch in the eighth. Peter Godrick (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) singled in Goodwin to extend the lead to 12-1. Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.) came on an brought home Varley, followed by a Wright fielder's choice that scored Machado to extend the lead. Torres capped off the inning with a two-RBI double to center to make it 16-1.

Coppin State would get one back in the eighth, but the Retrievers shut the door in the ninth to win 16-2.

Torres ended the day 3-5 from the plate with four RBI and three runs scored. Pinkston, Wright and Machado each had two hits and two RBI.

Starter Tanner Esposito (Williamsport, Pa.) picked up his first collegiate win, scattering five hits over six innings, giving up one run and striking out seven.

UMBC will head to Mount St. Mary's this weekend for a three game series to end their five game road trip.
