Columbia, Md.-- UMBC baseball played from behind the whole afternoon, working their way back to a tie late before Delaware State struck the final blow late in the game to take a 6-5 decision on Sunday. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the way with a pair of hits in the contest.

UMBC falls to 4-6 on the year while the Hornets improve to 5-7.

Delaware State got things started early, putting up four runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run to get things started.

The Hornets would add another in the second before the Retrievers finally broke through. Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) led off the second with a single and would get all the way to third after Blaze O'Saben (Warrenton, Va.) reached on an error. Beeman would come in to score the very next at bat on a Colin Casey (Ipswich, Mass.) RBI groundout. O'Saben would also score on a ground out, thanks to Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) to make it 5-2 after two.

The Retrievers would make it a two run deficit the next inning with Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) scoring off a throwing error and eventually tie it in the fifth.

Wright drove in Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) with a double after Pinkston led off the inning with a single. Wright would score just two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) to make it 5-5.

However, the Hornets would retake the lead on an RBI double in their half of the seventh.

UMBC would threaten in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs after a pair of hit-by-pitches and an intentional walk. However the game would end on a ground out, and the Retrievers falling 6-5.

Wright and Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.) each had two hits to lead the Retrievers with Wright driving in a run.

UMBC returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 when they host Mount St. Mary's at 6 p.m. at Alumni Field.
