Retrievers Show Power, Blast Past Maine in Double Header Sweep on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball showed their might, blasting four home runs in two games against America East foe Maine on Saturday. The Retrievers defeated the Black Bears by scores of 9-4 and 7-4, with junior Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.) going 3-3 in the nightcap, just a double shy of the cycle.

UMBC moves to 16-20, 8-6 AE on the year while Maine falls to 11-27, 6-8 AE.

Game One:

The Black Bears jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, getting a run in the second and three in the third. However, UMBC would respond in the bottom of the frame, putting up seven runs to take the lead for good.

After AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) got on by a walk, Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) launched the first of two home runs on the day to left center to cut the deficit to 4-2. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) doubled on the very next pitch and would be brought home on a Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) single.

Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) would get hit by a pitch with Beeman lacing a single to right to load the bases for Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.). Stack would take his 2-0 offering to dead center for the grand slam to give UMBC a 7-4 lead after three.

UMBC would add runs in the sixth and the eighth off a pair of Goodwin singles to give UMBC a 9-4 victory in game one.

Freshman Max Goron (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) picked up the win, going six strong innings, giving up four runs for his third win. Goodwin led the way with three hits and three RBI with Stack driving in four.

Game Two:

Maine once again took the lead early on with three runs in the second. The Retrievers cut into the deficit with a run in their half thanks to a Beeman solo home run. Bright struck again in the third, tying the game with a two-run home run to center. Floyd would follow with an RBI single as the inning was capped by a Beeman two-RBI triple to center to give UMBC a 6-3 lead.

After the Black Bears made it 6-4 in the fourth on a solo home run, UMBC got one back after a pair of throwing errors scored Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.).

Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) pitched three innings of relief to earn his eighth save in a 7-4 victory. Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) earned the win after an inning out of the bullpen.

Beeman had three hits including a single, triple and home run in the contest with three RBI.

UMBC and Maine close out the series tomorrow with a noon start.
