Schoch Breaks Single Season Saves Record in 7-5 Win Against George Washington

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball picked up 7-5 comeback win against George Washington on Tuesday afternoon. Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) recorded his seventh save of the year, breaking the single season record. Sophomore Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) drove in three runs, including the go-ahead run in the sixth.

UMBC moves to 10-15 on the year while GW falls to 19-13.

The Colonials struck first, scoring on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff triple to put them up 1-0 early. The Retrievers responded, taking the lead with runs in the second and third off a Jack Finn (Ellicott City, Md./Rider) RBI groundout and Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) sacrifice fly.

GW responded with three runs in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth, taking a 5-2 advantage.

UMBC fought back to tie it with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning and would later score on a Torres triple to left center. Stack followed up with an RBI single, with Finn bringing home stack on another RBI groundout.

Torres added insurance in the sixth and seventh with an RBI single and walk to make it 7-5, leading the way for Schoch.

Schoch pitched two perfect innings, striking out six for his program best seventh save of the season.

Andy Rozylowicz (Annapolis, Md./DeMatha) picked up the win with 2.1 innings of relief, giving up just one hit. Goodwin and Torres each had three hits in the win.

UMBC is back in action this weekend when they travel to UMass Lowell for an America East series. The River Hawks and Retrievers will play two on Saturday with a single game on Sunday starting at noon both days.
