Retrievers Power Past Hartford, 9-5 on Sunday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball took the rubber match against Hartford on Sunday by a 9-5 score. The Retrievers got a big game from AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) who drove in the tying and go ahead runs in the fifth inning.

UMBC moves to 5-10, 2-1 AE while Hartford falls to 2-12, 1-2 AE on the year.

Hartford kicked things off with a run in the first on a TJ Ward sacrifice fly that scored Nick Campana.

The Retrievers responded in the second with a pair of runs to take the lead. Bright led off with a double, then was brought home the next at bat by Dmitri Floyd who doubled to right. Floyd would be brought in just three batters later after Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) reached on an error.

The Hawks wasted no time, putting up three runs in the third to retake a 4-2 lead. The Black and Gold would take the lead for good in the fifth, putting up a three spot. Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) reached on a single, and would come home on after Wright reached on a fielding error. Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) scored the very next at bat on a Bright single. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) put UMBC in front with a single of his home, bringing home Wright.

UMBC would add to the lead in the sixth getting an RBI double from Wright to make it 7-4. Stewart and Bright each drove in another run to extend the Retriever lead, as they held on to win 9-5 on Sunday.

Wright led the way with a pair of hits, driving in three runs. Bright and Stewart each had two RBI in the game. Freshman Max Goron (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) picked up win number two in 2.0 innings of relief, with Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) picked up his second save of the weekend, fourth on the year in 3.1 innings of relief striking out six batters.

UMBC returns to action with a pair of midweek games against Mount St. Mary's (Tuesday, March 20) and Coppin State (Wednesday, March 21) both on the road.
