Retrievers Complete Ninth Inning Comeback; Down Towson 6-4 on Wednesday

Box Score

Towson, Md.—UMBC baseball trailed all game, but fought back from down 4-1 in the ninth to score five straight in a 6-4 victory against rival Towson on Wednesday. Junior AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the way with two hits, with his second one being the big one to put UMBC in front.

The Retrievers improve to 3-9 on the year while Towson falls to 3-12 on the year.

Towson got the scoring started early with a two-RBI single in the first to take a 2-0 lead. UMBC answered in the second, getting a one out RBI single from Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.) to left to plate Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro), who singled earlier in the inning.

The Tigers would add runs in the fourth and seventh to take a 4-1 lead late, setting up a big UMBC ninth inning.

Freshman Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) led off the inning with a walk and would advance after Chris Convers (Poolesville, Md./Pooleville) reached on a fielder's choice and error. Milkowski drove in Floyd the very next at bat, and would advance on a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) ground out. Both Milkowski and Convers would score on a Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) single to center after Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) walked.

Wright provided the heroics on a 3-2 single through the left side, scoring Campbell and Stack to give UMBC a 6-4 lead. Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) pitched a strong ninth to earn his first win of the year, striking out two in the inning.

Wright, Stewart and Milkowski each had two hits on the day with Wright and Campbell driving in two runs each. Schoch earned the win throwing 2.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts, giving up no hits.

UMBC returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18 against Hartford. Saturday will be a double header starting at noon, with a single game Sunday at 3 p.m.
