UMBC at Johns Hopkins Game Notes
The UMBC men's lacrosse team (2-3) visits tenth-ranked Johns Hopkins (3-2) at historic Homewood Field on Tuesday, March 13. The opening face-off is set for 7:00 and the game will be streamed on HopkinsSports.com
A Glance at the Retrievers
Junior Jack Andrews (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) scored three goals, and classmate Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) got two more as the UMBC men's lacrosse defeated Marist, 7-4, on a cold Saturday night at UMBC Stadium.
Andrews scored his three goals on just four shots, including the final two goals a 5-0 run that put the Retrievers up by four after Marist got the game's first goal. This was the junior's first multi-goal game this season.
UMBC improved to 2-0 at home and the victory snapped a three-game slide.
The four goals allowed were the fewest by UMBC since defeating Marist, 6-4, nearly one year ago in Poughkeepsie.
Freshman netminder Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earned his first win in a starting role. The newcomer turned away nine Red Fox shots in the contest.
Senior LSDM Billy O'Hara (Davidsonville, Md./South River) collected a team-high six ground balls and caused a pair of Marist miscues, giving him 12 ground balls and five caused turnovers in the last two games.
Freshman attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) has scored multiple goals in each of the four games he has played in and leads the squad with nine goals and 11 total points. Nolan has nine points (6g, 3a) and sophomore attackman Ryan Frawley (6g, 1a) has contributed with seven.
Lingner has 41 saves and 35 goals allowed in his brief tenure.
Lingner (13 saves, 2 ga) and freshman midfielder Steven Zichelli (2g, 2a) were tabbed America East Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively for games ending February 11. Lingner was also named to the USILA Team of the Week and was tabbed Inside Lacrosse's Alpha Player of the Week. O'Hara leads the team with 20 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
A Glance at the Blue Jays
It was the visiting Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team (3-2) playing the role of aggressor from the opening faceoff and the blue-clad Hopkins faithful who departed the Dome with smiles as the Blue Jays raced past Syracuse, 18-7, Saturday afternoon before an announced crowd of 5,542.
Cole Williams (4g, 1a), Shack Stanwick (2g, 3a) and Alex Concannon (3g, 2a) led a Blue Jay offense that saw 10 players dent the scoresheet. Senior Joel Tinney tied his career high with four assists and Marr and freshman Connor DeSimone added hat tricks.
Williams now leads Hopkins with 12 goals on the season. Junior Kyle Marr is the leading point-producer with 16 points (9g, 7a).
Last Year's Meeting/All-Time Series
Johns Hopkins (2-0) outscored UMBC, 7-0, in the second quarter and went on to a 15-5 victory over the Retrievers (0-2) at Homewood Field last February 11.
Max Maxwell was UMBC's lone multiple-point scorer with a goal and an assist. Then-freshman face-off specialist Jake Brothers (Elkridge, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) won 9-of-15 face-offs for the visitors.
The Blue Jays have won all 15 meetings between the two sides... UMBC is 0-9 at Homewood Field.
