Men's Lacrosse Drops Tough 7-5 Decision at Navy

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS – Host Navy (1-2) outscored UMBC (1-1), 7-3, in the middle 30 minutes of play and edged the Retrievers, 7-5, in snowy conditions at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.

Retriever freshman attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led the UMBC offense with a pair of goals and one assist.

UMBC outshot Navy, 35-30, but only put 15 shots on cage.

After 11:21 of scoreless lacrosse, sophomore attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) netted his first goal of the season, coming from behind the cage to break the ice. Freshman netminder Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made the goal stand up after 15 minutes, making four saves.

But the Mids bounced back in the second quarter, scoring twice in a 10-second span to grab a 2-1 lead by the 3:53 mark of the period. Retriever junior midfielder Gunnar Schimoler (Edgewater, Md./South River) would knot the score at 2-2, recording his first of the season at the 5:46 mark. But Navy would again put back-to-back goals together in short order, tallying with 5:26 and 5:05 to play in the quarter and take a 4-2 lead heading into the half.

Navy won five of seven first half draws and the Retrievers turned the ball over nine times in the first 30 minutes.

The Retrievers knotted the game at 4-all on Patschorke's two third-quarter scores. He converted a feed from Frawley at the 5:37 mark, then tallied an unassisted goal three minutes later to draw UMBC even.

But Navy, which won all six third-quarter draws, scored three consecutive times to end the quarter, including a pair of Greyson Torrain.

In the fourth, junior midfielder Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) broke a 16-minutes scoring drought with an unassisted goal from up top with 5:29 to play.

The Retrievers won the ensuing draw, but Steven Zichelli's (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) shot was stopped by Navy netminder Ryan Kern. UMBC regained possession twice in the final 3:10, but failed to register a shot.

Lingner finished with seven saves, while Kern countered with 10 for the Mids.

Senior defender John Tornabene (Havre de Grace, Md./Archbishop Curley) led the Retrievers with six ground balls and has ten through two games.

The Retrievers continue the in-state road swing at Mount St. Mary's on Friday. Face-off time is set for 4:00 p.m.
