Retriever Baseball Drops Double Header Against Stony Brook on Friday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball dropped both games of their double header against Stony Brook on Friday by scores of 12-5 and 7-1. The losses drop UMBC to third in the conference standings with the finale tomorrow serving as a winner take all game for second place and a first round bye in the tournament. 

UMBC falls to 19-23, 10-9 AE while Stony Brook moves to 25-23, 12-9 AE. 

Game One: 

UMBC saw themselves behind early in the contest, giving up a pair of runs in the second inning. The Retrievers then put two runs on the board in their half of the inning. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) and Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) got on base early in the stanza, and would move into scoring position after a wild pitch. Torres would score later on yet another wild pitch to make it 2-1. Bright scored on a Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) single to tie the game. 

From there, Stony Brook would score six runs over the next two innings to take an 8-2 lead in the fourth. UMBC would respond in the fourth, getting a sac fly from Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) scoring Torres. Carroll would answer again with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 8-4. 

The Seawolves would pull away from the Retrievers in the middle innings, scoring four straight to take a 12-4 lead into the eighth. Matt Shatto () would score on a Zack DeThomasis () RBI single, but the Seawolves held on for a 12-5 win. 

Carroll had two hits and two RBI in the game, while Bright added two hits as well. 

Game Two: 

The Seawolves picked up where they left off, taking a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. The game would be delayed a half-hour due to a lightning strike in the area just before the top of the third. 

After the delay, UMBC broke through to tie the game in the third. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) led off the inning with a single, and would later score on a Torres ground out. 

However Stony Brook would score a run in each of the next four innings, taking game two by a score of 7-1. 

Six different Retrievers had a hit in the game. 

Tomorrow's regular season finale will begin at 12:30 p.m. from Alumni Field. The team will honor their seniors prior to the game.
