Wilson Dazzles as UMBC Baseball Defeats George Mason, 4-2 on Wednesday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball won their second straight and third of their last four with a 4-2 victory against George Mason on Wednesday night. The Retrievers got a good start from freshman Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James), who picked up his first collegiate victory.

The win moves the Retrievers to 5-11 on the year while the Patriots fall to 9-15.

Wilson pitched a masterful game, going 5.1 innings, giving up just two runs with five strikeouts to earn his first collegiate victory.

The Retrievers got things going early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) got on with a single after Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) led off the inning with a single. Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) followed up with a fielders' choice and moved up on a passed ball.

Dolshun would score the first run the very next pitch on yet another passed ball. Switalski would score on a Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) double to right center, giving UMBC a 2-0 lead after one.

UMBC would strike again in the third, as Switalski would ground into a double play, but score Casali on the play, after he led off the inning with a walk.

The Patriots would answer back, getting a par of runs in the fifth, but a big Dolshun solo home run in the bottom of the inning put UMBC ahead 4-2.

From there the Retriever bullpen would shut the door on the Patriots, as Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md./Bethune-Cookman) went 3.1 innings to earn his first save of the season.

Dolshun led the offense, going 2-4 from the plate, scoring twice and driving in three runs.

The Retrievers will head to Emmitsburg to take on Mount St. Mary's in a double header on Saturday, April 1 before coming home to host the Mountaineers in a single game at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
