Retriever Baseball and Great Danes Split Double Header on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball came from behind for a walk-off 7-6 win in game one, before Albany took the nightcap 9-1. Junior Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) provided the heroics in game one with a single in the bottom of the ninth to give UMBC the victory.

The Retrievers move to 3-11, 1-1 AE, while the Great Danes improve to 8-7, 1-1 AE on the year.

Game One:

Albany opened the game with a trio of runs in the second and third innings to take an early 3-0 lead.

UMBC responded with a Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) RBI single in their half of the third to score freshman Kyle Benjamin (Mechanicsville, Md./Bishop McNamara).

The Great Danes would add to their lead with a two-run home run by Matt Hinchy in the sixth to make it 5-1. UMBC however would roar back to tie the contest with a Dolshun two-run home run, followed by a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) two-RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

The Retrievers would take the lead the very next inning on a Switalski double, making it 6-5 before Albany got a solo home run to once again tie the game in the eighth.

Switalski would provide the heroics however in the ninth, singling home Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) to give UMBC a 7-6 victory.

Both Dolshun and Switalski had three hits with Dolshun adding three RBI.

Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md./Bethune-Cookman) picked up his first win as a Retriever, throwing three innings of relief.

Game Two:

The Great Danes struck first, putting up three runs in the top half of third to take a 3-0 early.

Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) provided the Retrievers with their lone run in the bottom of the inning, connecting on a two-out solo home run to dead center field to make it 3-1.

From there, Albany would score six runs over the next three innings to take a 9-1 win in the nightcap. 

UMBC and Albany conclude their series tomorrow, Sunday March 26 with a noon first pitch at Alumni Field.
