Retrievers Close Non-Conference Play with a 77-40 Loss to Princeton on Saturday

Box Score

Princeton, N.J.— Senior guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) finishes with a team best ten points, as the Retrievers fall to Princeton 77-40 on Saturday. The Retrievers close the non-conference at 1-12, opening America East play at New Hampshire next week.

The Tigers came out of the gates early, going on an 11-0 run to open the game. Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) broke the drought with a layup in the paint midway through the quarter. Freshman Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) inched the Retrievers closer with a pair of free throws late in the quarter.

Laura Castaldo and Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va./Norfolk Academy) combined for a 5-0 run late in the quarter on a layup and three pointer to cut the deficit to eight, but an 8-0 run by Princeton gave them a 25-9 lead after one.

The Tigers kept that momentum going in the second, racing out to a 36-9 lead to open the quarter. They would outscore the Retrievers 22-2 in the period, taking a 47-11 lead into the break. The lone Retriever bucket came on a Summers layup midway through.

Summers led the Retrievers with four points in the opening 20 minutes. Moore chipped in three points, while Castaldo and Costa each had two.

Princeton came out of the locker rooms by extending their run before a Retriever run cut into the Tiger lead. Castaldo started the spurt with a layup, followed by a Costa backdoor cut.

After a pair of Summers' free throws, she hit a tough running layup in the paint to cut the Tiger lead. However, Princeton would respond with five straight points to regain control and take a 65-28 lead after three.

The Tigers would continue to hold the Retrievers at bay in the fourth, taking a 77-40 victory on Saturday.

Castaldo led the Retrievers with ten points, going 4-7 from the field and 2-2 from three. Moore added nine points with Summers chipping in eight points.

UMBC opens America East play at New Hampshire on Wednesday Jan. 3. Tip-off with the Wildcats is set for 11 a.m. in Durham.
