Box Score BALTIMORE – Visiting Harford scored the final three goals of the second quarter to take control and went on to defeat the UMBC Retrievers, 10-4, in an America East Conference affair played in winter-like conditions at UMBC Stadium.
Hartford, which entered the game as the top face-off squad in the nation, continued their dominance, as the Hawks won 14 of 17 draws, including all eight in the pivotal second quarter.
UMBC seniors Nate Lewnes (St. Mary's) and Jack Gannon (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored two goals each for the hosts, while Hartford freshman attackman Dylan Jinks led all scorers with five goals.
The Hawks (7-4, 3-1 AE) won their third straight game and for the fifth time in the last six outings. UMBC slipped to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.
After scoring a season-high 13 goals at Lafayette on April 2, UMBC was held to a season-low four scores. The four goals also represented the lowest figure a Retriever team has mounted in 15 meetings versus the Hawks .
Hartford led, 2-1, after 15 minutes and Jinks tallied his first of the game 24 seconds into the second quarter to extend the lead to 3-1. But Lewnes scored a man-up goal at the 2:47 mark, and, after UH answered that goal 26 seconds later, Lewnes hit on an unassisted score at the 8:29 mark to cut the deficit to 4-3.
But Jinks and the Hawks made the game's critical run, as he scored three times in a span of 2:39 late in the frame to take a 7-3 halftime advantage.
UMBC would strike first to open the third quarter, as Gannon capitalized in front on another man-up chance at the midpoint of the stanza. The Retrievers had a significant number of opportunities to trim the deficit further, as they attempted 10 third-quarter shots, but failed to convert.
Hartford's Will Dulin scored with three seconds to play in the third to restore a four-goal lead and UMBC would not dent the net in the final 22:47 of play.
UH owned a narrow 33-31 shots advantage, as both netminders enjoyed good days. Hartford's Ryan Vanderford stopped 11 Retriever shots, while UMBC junior netminder Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) turned aside 10 Hawk efforts.
UMBC freshman attackman Jack Andrews (St. Mary's) added two helpers on the day.
UMBC returns to action on Tuesday, April 12, when they face Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg.
