Lachance Leads Retriever Offense; UMBC Downs Coppin State 9-7

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball returned to the win column with a 9-7 victory against Coppin State on Wednesday night. Senior Kevin Lachance led the Retriever offense going 3-4 with three RBI as UMBC improves to 19-18 on the year.

Coppin State came out of the gates blazing, putting up four runs on six hits in the first half inning on starter Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood).

The Retrievers would respond, taking the lead with a pair of runs in the second, and three in the third. Tim Kelly (Hampton, Va./York/Virginia Tech) got things started with a monster double to right center, scoring AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West). Nick Loiodice (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) followed with a sac fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) brought the Retrievers to within one run with his RBI double plating Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville). Wright then hit a sac fly of his own, followed by a sac fly from Tim Kelly to take the lead.

From there the Retrievers would continue to increase their lead, as Lachance hit a sac fly to score Connor Hax. UMBC pushed the advantage to three after Casali hit the team's fifth sac fly of the game to make it a 7-4 game. Lachance would add a pair on a double to left to make it 9-4.

Coppin State would respond with a pair of runs in the eighth off three straight hits. The Eagles would tack on another, but Andy Rozylowicz (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) shut the door in the ninth to earn the save.

Lachance led the way with three hits and three RBI for the Retrievers. Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) added two hits for the winners. Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence/Fort Scott CC) picked up his fourth win of year giving up one hits with one strikeout.
