Casali Drives in Game Winning Run, Picks up Win on the Mound; UMBC Defeats Navy 6-4

Box Score

Annapolis, Md.—UMBC baseball picked up a huge 6-4 win at Navy on Tuesday, winning in comeback fashion. Junior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) drove in the game winning run, while throwing two innings on the mound to earn his first career victory on Tuesday, as the Retrievers improve to 17-16 on the year.

The Retrievers would find themselves in a see-saw battle with the Midshipmen, with both sides taking the lead throughout the game.

UMBC drew first blood, getting a pair in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI's from Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill). Switalski drove in Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West), followed by Naumann driving in Switalski just two pitches later.

Navy would respond in the fourth, scoring a pair off Andy Rozylowicz (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) to tie it. The Retrievers wasted no time retaking the lead, getting an RBI ground out from Gatto in the fifth.

The see-saw battle continued, as the Midshipmen retook the lead getting a pair of runs in the sixth off a triple and a sacrifice fly. The Mids would hold onto the lead until the ninth.

After Tim Kelly (Hampton, Va./York/Virginia Tech) led off the ninth reaching on a dropped third strike, he stole second setting up Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton). Kelly would score later on a wild pitch, advancing Carroll to second. Casali struck with the game winning double off the first baseman's glove to give UMBC a 5-4 lead. Gatto followed suit, drilling a single to right to score Casali, giving UMBC an insurance run.

Casali came on in the bottom of the inning, shutting the door on Navy to pick up his first collegiate victory. The Connecticut native threw two innings giving up just one hit. Casali added three hits, two runs scored and one RBI with the bat in the win.

The Retrievers return home to face Binghamton in an important America East series on Saturday and Sunday. The two will play a double header on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
