Maxwell, Lewnes Score Five Points Each, But Men's Lacrosse Falls, 14-10, at Vermont

Box Score

Burlington, Vt. – UMBC attackmen Nate Lewnes (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) and Max Maxwell (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored three goals and added two assists each, but host Vermont piled up 10 first-half goal and held off a late UMBC rally, defeating the Retrievers, 14-10, in an America East Conference game at Virtue Field.

The Retrievers trailed, 13-7, in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but goals by freshman LSDM Jason Brewster (San Diego, Calif.), Maxwell and Lewnes trimmed the deficit to 13-10 with 3:05 remaining. But the Catamounts won the ensuing draw and moments later, UMBC committed a slashing penalty. UMBC was forced to double the ball, but Catamount leading scorer Ian Mackay broke through the double team and scored into an unguarded net with 2:07 on the clock to seal the victory.

UMBC (3-8, 0-4 America East) got on the board first as Lewnes scored on a blistering shot from up top just 51 seconds into the contest. But the Retrievers could not take advantage of unexpected dominance at the face-off circle in the first stanza and committed turnovers on its next three possessions, leading in part to a 3-0 Catamount run.

Vermont (6-7, 2-2 AE) continued to capitalize on Retriever miscues and penalties, building a 5-3 first quarter lead to 10-5 at the half. The Retrievers committed 13 of 19 turnovers in the first 30 minutes.

The Retrievers would outscore Vermont, 2-1, in the third quarter, but back-to-back man-up goals early in the fourth restored the hosts to a six-goal margin.

Lewnes has amassed all 27 of his team-leading goals since returning from injury seven games ago. He now has five games this season and 14 career contests in which he has scored hat tricks or better. His 103 career goals are now tied with Dan Marohl ('00) for 11th place in school history.

Sophomore midfielder Max Haldeman (York, Pa.) added two goals for UMBC.

Vermont outshot UMBC, 38-31, and UMBC junior netminder Ruston Souder (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was credited with 13 saves.

The Catamounts capitalized on three-of-four man-up chances, while UMBC did not convert on its two opportunities. Mackay led all scorers with five goals and seven total points.

For the third consecutive game, the Retrievers cleared (22) successfully in all their attempts.

UMBC will play its final non-conference contest of the campaign on Tuesday, April 19 when they host the Penn Quakers. The opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
