Baltimore, Md.— UMBC baseball fell behind early, but outscored Coppin State 12-0 after the first inning to take a 12-3 victory at Alumni Field on Wednesday. The win improves the Retrievers to 4-9 on the year.

The Eagles jumped on the Retrievers early, getting three in the opening inning. The Retrievers answered with a big lead-off home run from Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) to make it 3-1 Eagles after one.

UMBC cut the deficit to 3-2 after Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) singled home A.J. Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West). The hits would keep coming, as the Retrievers got a single from Tim Kelly (Hampton, Va./York/Virginia Tech) to score Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara), followed by a Lachance walk that allowed Wright to score to give the Retrievers a 4-3 lead. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) would add some insurance, drilling a two-run home run over the left field fence, making it 6-3.

The Retriever onslaught would continue as Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) Casali and Hax all drove runs in the sixth to increase the advantage to 10-3 late. UMBC would get two more runs late taking the game 12-3 and improving to 4-9 on the year.

Casali had a monster offensive day, going 3-5 with a double, triple and home run while scoring three times and driving in three. Lachance continued his hot start to the year going 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI.

The Retrievers will be off for a week, with their next game coming at Richmond on Wednesday, March 16. First pitch with the Spiders is set for 3 p.m.
