Switalski's Heroics Help Baseball Complete Sweep of UMass Lowell

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—Sophomore Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) hit a tie-breaking, two-out, single through the left side in the eighth inning to give the UMBC Baseball team 4-3 lead they would not relinquish to complete a three game America East sweep of UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Senior Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence) would work a perfect ninth, striking out two looking, to earn his second save of the season.

UMBC (10-10, 4-1) took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run first inning homer off the bat of junior catcher Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) that scored senior Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge N.Y./Smithtown West).

UMass Lowell (9-10, 0-3) would get three runs in the fourth inning to knock out Retriever starter Matt Chanin (Olney, Md/Sherwood), but freshman Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va/Patriot) would come in and end the rally. Christian pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two, to keep UMBC in the game.

Switalski tied the game up at three in the sixth on an inside the park homer centerfield. The sophomore hit a shot to deep straight-away centerfield that the River Hawk centerfielder jumped to try and catch halfway up the wall, and actually got a glove on, but he crashed into the wall dropping the ball. By the time another UML outfielder picked up the ball on the warning track, Switalski was rounding third and scored standing up.

After Denis Mikush (Burke, Va/Robinson) escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the eighth, the Retrievers took the lead for good. Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) worked a one-out walk, would move to second on a two-out single by Gatto, and score on Switalski's single.

Mikush picked up his first win of the season, going two scoreless innings, while allowing a hit, a walk and striking out two.

The Retrievers are back in action on Tuesday, March 29, when they travel to George Washington for a 3 p.m. game.
