UMBC Races Past Old Dominion on Saturday

RESULTS 

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC swimming and diving raced past Old Dominion on Saturday, as the men won 167-124 , while the women were 158-130 winners. Senior Emily Escobedo broke another pool record, this time in the 200 breast, breaking the mark that Masami Tanaka set in 2004.

"We are proud of the way the team performed today. ODU is one of the top team in the CCSA and to be able to compete shows the committment that the team has to continue to improve," head coach Chad Cradock stated after the meet. 

The UMBC men and women kicked off the meet with wins in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Amanda Day and Emily Vance took first in a time of 1:46.32, while Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo and Gregor Spoerlein won in 1:32.61, just missing the pool record by .18 seonds.

On the women's side, Hania Moro and Emily Escobedo once again led the Dawgs with three and two individual wins each. Moro took both distance freestyle events, with wins in the 1,000 (10:22.86) and the 500 (5:02.89) while taking the 200 free in a time of 1:52.00.

Escobedo once again left her mark in the pool, this time with a pool record in the 200 breast. She would win the race in 2:12.95, breaking the mark that Masami Tanaka set back in 2004 of 2:13.20. The senior would go on to win the 100 breast in a time of 1:03.18.

"Emily is swimming the best she ever has at home, now with two pool records in two home meets. She is swimming at a very high level right now, and she continues to get beter and better each day," Cradock said of his senior. 

Other Retriever winners on the women's side included Haylee Committe (50 free, 24.96), Alissa Caulfield (100 free, 53.80), and Amanda Day (100 fly, 58.45).

UMBC closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay as Escobedo, Committe , Caulfield and Moro took first in a time of 3:34.25.

On the boards, Abby Biddulph swept both the one meter and three meter dive with scores of 233.40 and 204.52. 

The men were led by a quarter of dual winners that includes Haythem Abdelkhalek, Gregor Spoerlein, Philip Adejumo and Ahmed Wahby. Abdelkhalek earned victories in both distance freestyle events with times of 9:30.49 in the 1,000 and 4:38.46 in the 500.

Spoerlein swept the sprint freestyle races with wins in the 50 (21.20) and 100 (46.12). Wahby and Adejumo won their respective disciplines in the backstroke and butterfly. Wabhy won gold in the 100 back in 51.09 and the 200 back in 1:50.80, while Adejumo was a winner in the 100 fly (50.12) and 200 fly (1:52.73).

Other Retriever male winners include Ilia Rattsev (200 free, 1:40.18), Luis Galvan (200 breast, 2:06.34) and Nikola Trajkovic (200 IM, 1:52.96).

The Retrievers closed out the meet on a high note, taking the 400 free relay, as Rattsev, Wahby, Jared Vance and Spoerlein won in a time of 3:07.72.

UMBC returns to the pool November 17-19 when they travel to the Patriot Invitational, host by George Mason. Prelims will start at 10 a.m. with finals commencing at 6 p.m. each day.
