Box Score Stony Brook, N.Y.— UMBC men's soccer ended their season with a 2-0 loss to Stony Brook on Wednesday night. The Seawolves scored both tallies in the first half on their way to the win. UMBC finishes the year at 5-9-3, 0-7-0 AE.
The Retrievers had a pair of chances early on, the first coming off a Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) cross, that Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) had sail high.
Senior Christian Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) collected a cross from freshman Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery), but Seawolf keeper Tom McMahon saved his header in the 12th minute.
The Seawolves had their chances early on, and capitalized in the 21st minute, as Mark Irvine placed a shot home off a cross from Thibault Duval.
Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) had a golden chance minutes after the goal to try and tie things up. He had a free kick just outside the box, but his shot hit off the crossbar and out.
Stony Brook would tack on another goal late in the half, as Serge Gamwamya buried a shot off a free kick from Duval in the 34th minute, and would take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Both teams had five shots in the opening stanza, with UMBC garnering two corner kicks.
Half number two saw the Retrievers control the run of play for a majority of the half, as freshman Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) sent a ball across the mouth of goal, but classmate Tre McCalla (Toronto, Ontario/Senator O'Connor) could not get on the end of it. Late in the half, James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) collected a loose ball near the box, but once again McMahon made the save, as the Seawolves went on to win 2-0.
UMBC was outshot, 10-9 on the evening, but held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) ended with three saves, as Kahsai, Morales, and Jean-Gilles each had two shots.
