Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball recorded their 30th win, and 12th win in a row in a 6-5 win on Sunday against Albany. The Retrievers also locked up the two seed in the upcoming America East Playoffs, and now sit at 30-16, 13-8 AE on the year.
After the Great Danes got a run in the top of the first, UMBC answered with a trio of runs in their half of the first, UMBC responded with a trio of runs. A double steal by Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) allowed Lachance to score. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) followed up with an RBI ground out to make it 2-0, and a Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) single gave UMBC a 3-0 lead early.
The Great Danes would answer, getting three runs the very next inning to take a 4-3 lead in the second.
UMBC had the response, as they did all afternoon. Lachance ripped a single to left allowing Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) to cross the plate. Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) would score just a few pitches later on a throwing error by the Albany pitcher to make it 5-4 UMBC.
After an Albany home run by Matt Hinchy made it 5-5, the Retrievers got the go-ahead run, in the form of an Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) single through the middle to score Corbi.
Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) came on in the eighth to record a two inning save to give UMBC the win, 6-5, and a spot in the America East Playoffs for the first time since 2008.
Switalski led the offense, going 4-4 with a run scored. Connor Staskey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem/Temple) got the win going five innings giving up just one run in relief.
The Retrievers are back on the diamond on Tuesday, May 12 when they host Georgetown. The game with the Hoyas is set for 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
DAWG BITES:
- With his stolen base in the seventh inning, Anthony Gatto became the all-time leader in career stolen bases with 48.
- UMBC recorded their most strike outs in a season in the win on Sunday as well.
- This is the first time since 2008 that UMBC will play in the America East Playoffs. The win also secured UMBC the two seed in the tournament.
- The Retrievers recorded 30 wins for the first time since 2002.
