Annapolis, Md. - UMBC senior Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and junior Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) placed in the top 11 amongst a talented field of 135 at the 2014 Salty Dog Invitational Cross Country meet held at the U.S. Naval  Academy.

With 100 points, the Retrievers placed fourth overall as 11 teams competed at the 6k competition. NCA Division III power Johns Hopkins won the meet with 26 points, followed by host Navy (59), Richmond (78) and UMBC. The Retrievers finished well ahead of fifth-place George Washington (154).

The Retrievers also finished fourth at this event in 2013.

Daly, who crossed the line first overall in UMBC's opening meet at Mount St. Mary's two weeks ago, continued her excellent start by placing ninth against the field. She crossed in a time of 22:51.33, moments before teammate and local product Cologer placed 11th  in a time of 23:05.76.

Another Annapolis native, junior Katie Govatos (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis/Florida Southern) was UMBC's next finisher, placing 24th overall in a time of 23:31.57. Senior Julie Gessler (Ellicott City, Md./IND) (23:33.95, 26th) and junior Nicole Dawson (Jessup, Md./Hammond) (23:45.66, 30th) rounded out the top five for the Retrievers.

Dawson led UMBC with a 16th place finish at the Salty Dog Invitational last season.
