Gill Throws Complete Game to Give UMBC Doubleheader Split with Maine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior right-hander Mac Gill (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) held Maine to one unearned run on five hits over seven complete innings to give UMBC a 2-1 win in game two and earn a split of the America East doubleheader, Saturday at Alumni Field.

Maine (8-15, 1-1 AE) took the opener, 4-1, over behind a complete game from redshirt junior Tommy Lawrence.

Gill (1-1) was fantastic for UMBC (4-10, 2-3 AE), tossing his first complete game of the season after twirling five last season as a junior.  The veteran righty took a shutout into the top of the seventh, but the Black Bears pushed one across after an error with one out.

UMBC banged out six hits against Maine starter Shaun Coughlin (1-2), handing the senior the loss by scoring twice in the bottom of the third on back-to-back doubles by sophomore Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and freshman Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley).

Lachance went 2-for-2 in the second game, scoring the eventual game-winning run, after picking up a hit in four at-bats in game one.  Dolshun had the Retrievers' only RBI in the opening game of the twin bill, going 1-for-3 in the contest.

Both starters stranded a runner on base in the first inning of game two and after Gill sent the Black Bears down in order in the second, UMBC looked to give him support in the bottom half.  After a fly out to start the frame, junior Ryan Sliwak (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh/Nassau CC) singled to right and then classmate Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) lashed a doubled off the centerfield wall to give the hosts second and third with one down.  Coughlin beared down, though, and got out of the inning after a ground out and a line out to center.

Gill held Maine off the board in the top of the third and was rewarded as his offense pushed two across in the bottom half.  Junior Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) started the rally with a one-out walk and then Lachance and Dolshun made the most of the opportunity with their back-to-back two-baggers.

That was all the help Gill would need as the senior held Maine scoreless until a two-out RBI grounder by Colin Gay got the guests on the board.

In the opening game of the day, Lawrence limited UMBC to just a single run while scattering eight hits over a full nine innings.  The reigning America East Pitcher of the Year struck out eight Retrievers while issuing just one walk.

UMBC starter Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax/Tennesse) was effective for the hosts, surrendering just two runs on five hits in six innings of work.  Vanderplas (0-2) fanned five Black Bears in the outing.

Maine scored the go-ahead run on a double play ball in the top of the seventh to take the lead, 2-1, and then added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings against the Retriever bullpen.

The Retrievers and Black Bears wrap up the weekend with the rubber game on Sunday at Alumni Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
