Fairfax, Va.- UMBC spotted host George Mason an early two-goal
lead and a late rally fell just short, as the red-hot Patriots
nipped the Retrievers, 2-1, in a non-conference soccer match held
at George Mason Stadium.
Mason, which received the third-most votes outside of the top 25
in the latest NSCAA poll, improved to 6-0-0 on the season, while
the Retrievers slipped to 2-2-2.
Senior midfielder Milo Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily
Carr) converted a penalty kick in the 70thminute to
slice the Retriever deficit to 2-1. Junior midfielder Kadeem
Dacres (Rosedale, N.Y./Mercer County CC) sent a through
ball ahead which a Mason defender got a hand on, resulting in
Kapor's first career penalty kick effort.
The Retrievers had several crosses in the final 20 minutes and
got its final corner kick opportunity of the game with 1:15
remaining, but could not cash in.
The Patriots were opportunistic in the first half, scoring on
two of their six attempts. Timmy Mulgrew beat the UMBC defense down
the left side and scored into the far right corner of the net in
the eighth minute of play. The goal was the earliest that UMBC has
allowed in 2012.
The Patriots doubled the lead in the
29th minute, as Taylor Morgan finished a passing
play right in front of the UMBC cage.
Mason outshot UMBC by a slim 8-7 margin and only managed a pair
of second-half shots. UMBC junior goalkeeper Phil
Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) took the loss,
making three saves.
UMBC will take on local rival Loyola on Wed., Sept. 19. The
start time at Retriever Soccer Park is set for 7:00 p.m.
