UMBC Baseball Finishes Season Sweep of UMES with 8-5 Home Win

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC scored five runs in the fourth inning to break open a 2-2 game and held off UMES to sweep the season series with an 8-5 win, Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Kevin Ladner (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) went six innings for UMBC (13-27), allowing two earned runs on seven hits to move to 4-1 on the year.  Junior Stephen Chrzanowski (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Hagerstown CC) pitched three innings to earn his first career save.

In a staff outing, Jordan Bone took the loss for UMES (8-43) after giving up five runs in two innings of work.

The Retrievers pounded out 13 hits for the second-straight game as five players recorded multi-hit games on Wednesday.

After the visitors took the lead in the top of the first on two doubles, UMBC answered right back as freshman Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) ripped a two-out double to left and sophomore Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) singled through the right side to tie the score.

UMES took the lead again in the top of the second as three straight hits brought around Joshua James who started the rally with a one-out double to left.

After failing to score in the second, the Retrievers once again drew level in the third as freshman Mark Esposito (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) doubled down the left field line and then scored as junior Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) yanked a double down the first base line.

Ladner sent the Hawks down in order in the fourth and his lineup responded by scoring five runs in the bottom half to build a 7-2 cushion.  Senior Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) greeted Bone with a double to right-center on just the left-hander's second pitch.  Freshman Manny Colon (Williamstown, N.J./Buena Regional) then drew a full-count walk and Allinder gave the Retrievers the lead on an infield single by sophomore Ian Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Rutgers Prep).  Glassman and Colon took second and third on the play due to an errant throw and Colon came around to score as the next batter, sophomore Vince Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), went the other way for a double to right.  McCabe then lifted a sac fly to right to drive in Glassman. Sophomore Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) followed with a single, bringing in Corbi, and Lachance capped the scoring with his second double of the day.

UMES pegged back with a single run in the top of the fifth and then scored twice in the seventh to draw within two at 7-5.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Retrievers scored an insurance run as Esposito dropped down a sacrifice squeeze bunt with Corbi racing home from third.

UMBC travels just off campus tomorrow to take on local rival Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
