Box Score Emmistburg, Md.- UMBC senior back Liam Paddock (Worcestershire,
England/Chase Technology College) came back to the Retriever lineup
and scored an early goal, leading the Retrievers to a 1-0 victory
at Mount St. Mary's.
UMBC won its second straight and improved to 2-0-2 on the
season, while the Mount fell to 1-3-0.
The Retrievers dominated the first portion of the game, taking
four corners in the first six minutes of play. On their fifth
attempt, just 7:41 into the game, senior midfielder Milo Kapor
(Toronto, Ont./Emily Carr) took the corner from the left side and
his serve found Paddock eight yards from the goal. The
recently-named 2012 ECAC Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year
headed the ball just inside the far right post to give the visitors
the early lead.
Paddock, who scored his third career goal, missed the first
three games of the season with a lower body injury.
UMBC ended up with eight corners to only one for the Mount in
the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Retrievers had chances in the
66th and 74th minutes, but could
not get an insurance goal. UMBC could not put away a ball on a
scramble in front on the first opportunity, and junior midfielder
Kadeem
Dacres' (Rosedale, N.Y./Mercer County CC) shot in with 16
minutes remaining was knocked over the bar by Mount netminder Peter
Steve.
The home team's best chance came with 7:30 remaining, when the
Mount's Mark Pleisance unleashed a hard, low shot from 23 yards
out, but UMBC junior goalkeeper Phil Saunders
(Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) made a diving save to his right to
snare the attempt.
UMBC held possession for nearly all of the remaining time and
ran its winning streak over the Mountaineers to ten consecutive
games.
"They are a very tough team, especially up here," said head
coach Pete
Caringi, Jr.. "Our strategy was to come out early and get a
goal, so we could relax a bit. We started well, we finished well-in
the middle we could have played a lot better, but we'll take the
win."
UMBC outshot Mount St. Mary's, 12-11, and had 12 of the game's
14 corner kicks. Saunders crafted the shutout with six saves,
earning his second clean sheet of the year and ninth of his career.
Steve made five saves for the Mountaineers.
Kapor has assists on all four Retriever goals this season.
UMBC returns to action on Tues., Sept. 11, when they travel to
College Park, to take on fifth-ranked Maryland at 7:30 p.m.
