BALTIMORE – Senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) returned to the lineup for UMBC (9-32, 1-13 America East) and hit his conference-leading eighth homerun of the year, but Stony Brook (34-10, 12-2 America East) won the series finale, 17-1, on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep at the Baseball Factory Field.

Himmelstein had missed the last three games for the Retrievers after getting hit in the hand with a pitch last weekend against Albany.

Stony Brook starter Evan Stecko-Haley (5-3) pitched seventh inning, giving up just the solo homerun to Himmelstein while scattering five hits to pick up the win.

Sophomore Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) (2-7) took the loss after yielding five earned runs on 12 hits in five innings of work.

The Seawolves got to Vlasic immediately as Travis Jankowski led off the game with a solo homerun to right field and added another before the righty could get out of the first. 

The visitors broke the game open over the course of the next three innings plating three runs in the second and solo runs in the third and fourth to extend their lead to 7-0. 

UMBC got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Himmelstein smashed a homerun down the left field line to cut the lead to six.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Stony Brook scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh inning and added two more in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Third baseman Willie Carmona led the way for Stony Brook's lineup going 5-for-6 on Sunday, hitting his eight homerun of the season while driving in and scoring four runs.

UMBC finishes up its season-long home stand on Tuesday by hosting Georgetown at the Baseball Factory Field.  First pitch between the Retrievers and Hoyas is set for 6 p.m.

DAWG BITES

-           After being held to just four hits in the opener to snap their 30-game streak of five or more hits, the Retrievers recorded five in yesterday's night cap and six on Sunday.

-          UMBC pitchers struck out three batters on Sunday to extend their streak to 55 consecutive games with at least one K.

-          Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) went hitless on Sunday, snapping his personal six-game hit streak.

-          UMBC is now 2-12 against teams from New York in 2012. (1-3 vs. Albany; 1-2 vs. Army; 0-3 vs. Binghamton; 0-1 vs. Buffalo; 0-3 vs. Stony Brook).

-          Stony Brook now leads the series with UMBC 31-7 since the Retriever entered the America East in 2004.  The Seawolves have won the past 18 games between the two clubs.
